A more expressive and versatile visual language for Stripe’s wave, creating a flexible foundation that can evolve across different brand moments.
As Stripe’s identity expanded, its core graphic elements needed clearer roles within a cohesive visual language that could move between restrained communications and more expressive brand moments.
We explored the system from the ground up, testing different symbols, relationships and behaviours against the same question: what could carry Stripe’s precision and optimism without becoming decorative or overused?
The work established a clearer kinetic framework for the brand, strengthening recognition while allowing its visual expression to scale with greater consistency and range.
The process started by questioning the asset itself. Different directions were explored to understand what the wave uniquely contributed to Stripe, and whether another symbol could carry the brand more effectively. The result was a clearer role for the wave: expressive, flexible and distinctive without needing to appear everywhere.
A payments interface, a keynote and a large-scale brand moment ask different things from the identity. Rather than applying the same element at different sizes, the system defines when the wave should lead, support or disappear entirely, alongside a stronger role for Stripe’s graphic symbol. This created a broader spectrum of expression while keeping the underlying brand logic consistent.
Form, colour, materiality and movement were pushed to understand how far the wave could evolve before it stopped feeling recognisably Stripe. Simpler geometry, warmer palettes and different surface treatments opened up new expressions, while motion studies established how the element could shift between graphic, spatial and more dimensional behaviours.
The explorations became a visual language, motion behaviours and guiding principles designed to give future teams a clear framework rather than a fixed set of assets. Developed over eight weeks with Stripe’s brand and engineering teams, the work created the groundwork for a system that could eventually extend into tooling and broader brand applications.
The strongest brand evolutions build on what people already recognise, then create the principles, behaviours and range needed for the identity to keep growing with the business.
